- Deerfield Beach, Florida. Mattus bet wisely that upscale New
- Yorkers, and later the rest of the country, would be willing
- to pay more for a high-calorie, butterfat-rich ice cream with
- a made-up, foreign-sounding name. Having parlayed the once modest,
- horse-drawn family business into a multimillion-dollar success,
- he sold it to Pillsbury Co. in 1983.
